New Data Center Updates

Michael Tang, associate director

We are pleased to report that the new high-density and green data center is now operational, thanks to months of hard work by our contractors and colleagues of FMO. The new data center is powered by uninterruptible power supply (UPS) fed by an upgraded power transformer system recently commissioned and housed in a dedicated facility at LG1.

The new data center is positioned primarily for supporting the rapid growth in demand for on-premises IT, particularly exemplifed by the increasing need of high-performance computing (HPC) resources for research and teaching. Aligned with the sustainability goals of the University,  energy-efficient technologies and design are deployed for the new data center in order to achieve high standards in sustainability (e.g. PUE, etc.).

Over the past few months, migration of computing equipment from the old data center has been taking place. The old data center, operational since the opening of HKUST,  will be revamped to increase our on-premises hosting capacity. In addition, it can accomodate departmental computing equipment in a centralized and energy-efficient setup, with an aim to further reduce the energy and space footprint of on-premises IT of the University.

For those who are interested in how the new data center and the upcoming colocation data center can help support research, teaching and operational needs, please feel free to contact us at cchelp@ust.hk.
